Eligibility and Suitability
Not every dog or handler will be suited to Assistance Dog training. Before progressing into the Melton Assistance Dogs Training Program, both the handler and dog need to meet our eligibility requirements and complete a suitability assessment.
Our aim is to ensure that the program is appropriate for both you and your dog and that there is a strong foundation for moving forward together.
Eligibility Requirements
To be considered for the Assistance Dog Training Program:
- You must have your own dog to train through the program.
- Your dog must be at least 5 months of age and under 7 years of age when entering the program.
- You and your dog must complete Level 1 – 6 Weeks Obedience & Manners through Brigitte’s Dog School.
- You and your dog must then progress to Level 2 – 4 Weeks Intermediate.
- Regular attendance and active participation in training are important throughout the foundation levels.
- Both the handler and dog must successfully complete the suitability assessment process before progressing into the Assistance Dog Training Program.
Suitability Assessment
The suitability assessment takes place at Week 8 of your training pathway, which is Week 2 of Level 2 – Intermediate.
The assessment allows the instructor to look at how you and your dog have progressed through the foundation training and whether moving into Assistance Dog training is appropriate for both of you.
The assessment will consider:
- Your dog’s temperament and general behaviour
- Engagement and responsiveness to you as the handler
- Ability to remain calm and focused around distractions
- Behaviour around people and other dogs
- Reliability of the skills learned during Level 1
- Progress during the Intermediate level
- The working relationship between you and your dog
- Your dog’s overall suitability for progressing into Assistance Dog training
Following a Successful Assessment
If you and your dog successfully complete the assessment, you will continue through the remainder of the 4-Week Intermediate level.
A home visit will then be arranged before you enter the Melton Assistance Dogs Training Program to help ensure that your dog has a suitable home environment and to discuss the next stage of your training journey.
